It's too easy to find excuses and not push yourself as hard. I suspect I wouldn't work as hard if I didn't have a trainer so I'm not stopping anytime soon.

Dennis Ulrey

Dennis made a decision- he didn't want to be old at 65. At 257 lbs he felt like it was getting out of hand- his blood pressure, his sugar levels, and his weight. So he signed up for Personal Training at the Y, because by himself he wasn't getting anywhere. He wasn't really sure about Personal Training when he signed up, but it proved to be just what he needed. He had three goals: to lose weight, improve his overall health and increase muscle tone. He lost 45 lbs. and dropped his blood sugar levels from 125 to 90. His blood pressure went down significantly too. He can work around the house and yard without getting tired, play with his grandkids, get out of the chair easier and his clothes are too big! Walking down the street a half mile used to wear him out and now he can walk 4-5 miles. He feels great and has a sense of accomplishment. He knows that he's changed his lifestyle, and it's not temporary. "It's too easy to find excuses and not push yourself as hard. I suspect I wouldn't work as hard if I didn't have a trainer so I'm not stopping anytime soon." A trainer is knowledgeable about what you need to progress and how hard to push you. With a trainer, you have someone waiting on you, so you feel obligated to make it in. Dennis works with Larry twice a week and comes in once on his own. He normally warms up half an hour beforehand. Then after the training session he spends 30 minutes on the treadmill and 30 minutes in the pool. He had to build up to that; as he felt better physically, he could try extra exercises and do them for longer. Dennis's advice for anyone in his position- "Set some sort of goal and a plan to achieve the goal. If I could do it at 65 years old, anyone can do it! You're supposed to be tired- push yourself and go over the hurdle. It's not necessarily fun but the results are great!"
