Being connected with the staff at the Y and with others who are also battling cancer has made a big difference in my life.

What?? Exercise in a gym? Who me?? That idea had not been on my ‘do list’ for any of the decades of my life since high school phys ed class!
My initial contact with the Y was a few years ago when a friend and I finally decided to team up and try out the track at the ‘old’ Y on Smith Street. Soon after we got that walking habit established, things started changing quickly in my life. I was diagnosed with the ‘Big C’– that dreaded cancer word– in the spring of 2013, and was already at Stage 4. My primary care doctor challenged me to make changes to get my general health in better shape, and then later when LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA became available in Warsaw, my oncologist recommended that I get involved with that program. It was my great privelage to be one of the participants in the very first LIVESTRONG at the YMCA class in Warsaw and I am so thankful for all those who made it possible to have this program available locally.
Being connected with the staff at the Y and with others who are also battling cancer has made a big difference in my life. Being assessed for appropriate exercise activities, being taught to use equipment properly, and being constantly encouraged by staff to keep trekking along have helped me establish and maintain healthy exercise routines and good nutritional habits that contribute significantly and positively to my quality of life.
Cancer is a fierce enemy, and I am fighting hard to stay as strong as I can as long as I can. I encourage others to get ‘onboard’ with their medical teams and with the skilled supportive staff at the Y to learn healthy living habits that will help them LIVE STRONG!
