YMCA Martial Arts

Martial Arts
(Ages 5-12)
American Karate for Kids is a comprehensive program consisting of approximately 35% martial arts, 15% lifeskills, and 50% functional fitness. The program is designed to improve children’s overall ability to function in everyday life. Topics include but are not limited to Martial Arts Basics, Importance of Physical Fitness, Games & Drills for Fitness, Dealing with Bullies, Abduction Prevention, and Family Communication.

Martial Arts
(Ages 13-16) (17 years old and up)
Learn a comprehensive collection of martial arts tactics and techniques from the art of Modern Kempo Karate; a system that combines the old with the new. Lessons include: blocking techniques, hand strikes, practical kicks, joint-locks, conditioning exercises, and self defense techniques.

Self Defense Class for Women
(18 years and up)
Learn simple tactics and strategies for preventing crime and assault. This short but comprehensive course covers the basic components of personal safety and self-defense including awareness, avoidance, prevention, mental preparation, simple escape strategies, verbal self-defense and boundary setting, flinch response theories, 2 easy-to-remember techniques, counters to common attacks, and more. This class concludes with a universal skill-set that can be used against almost every type of standing attack. Participants are then provided the opportunity to test their new skills out on a live padded assailant.
