Gary Colby Gary is 67 years old and ready to embark on a 1,000 mile border to border bicycle trip. He will travel with the Wandering Wheels organization from Florida to the Great Lakes. But that’s not really where the trip begins or ends.
This is Gary’s story:
“After retiring a few years ago I joined the YMCA in North Webster to lose weight and get physically fit. With the help of staff members, I lost over 50 lbs, toned up, & felt wonderful. As an added bonus, I met other “Y” members who have become some of my best friends. I will be forever grateful for that.
It was at the “Y” I met a Wandering Wheels staff person who encouraged me to ride with the team on a shorter trip. I did, resulting in a renewed interest in cross county cycling that I enjoyed years ago.
My upcoming journey will be a bit more challenging. So I turned to the “Y” again to help me prepare. This time it was the YMCA in Warsaw. I have been a part of the morning indoor cycling class all winter experiencing instructors like Kevin, Stacy, Brenda, Karen and Steve. They not only offer instruction, advice, and encouragement but have a way of challenging the class while at the same time making it fun and a feel good experience.
As a result I feel prepared for what lies ahead but I am not naïve to think it will be a piece of cake. Believe me! I am very grateful for my cycle team leaders and what they have taught me. Which will be especially true when I ride over and through the Blue Ridge Mountains.
When I get back from my journey it won’t be over because there will be other trips, more work out sessions at North Webster and cycling classes at Warsaw. Where by the way, I have made another set of new friends!
I am reminded: The Y is for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Y has indeed made me feel younger, healthier and a part of a community that cares for each other.”
